Texas Instruments (TI) announced two integrated products that provide power and protection for USB ports, the TPS2500 and TPS2501. The product combines a boost switching regulator with an on-board current-limiting switch for significant space and cost savings, providing an integrated solution for 1.8V ~ 5.25 V input 5V USB power requirements. The output current limit is programmable from a minimum of 130 mA to a maximum of 1400 mA through an external resistor, enabling a single device to support 2 USB ports.
The on-board switching regulator is a high-efficiency synchronous boost converter that provides over 94% efficiency for a 3.3V input voltage over the typical USB current range. The TPS2500 uses pulse skipping mode for high efficiency at light loads, while the TPS2501 operates at a fixed frequency over the entire load range for EMI sensitive designs. Both products meet the needs of battery-powered portable devices, set-top boxes, printers, and any USB application that does not have a native 5V power supply.
Main features and advantages of TPS2500
1. Integrated boost converter and switch can save space and optimize design scheme;
2. A wide Vin range of 1.8 ~ 5.25 V is optimized for single Li-ion battery applications;
3. Auxiliary 5.1 V output, no additional 5V DC/DC power supply required;
4. The current limit range is between 0.13 ~ 1.4 A, which is the best current range for USB power supply applications.
