If the power chip is hot, it means that the chip is already working abnormally. If it is hot for a long time, it is easy to burn out. The hot power chip is mainly caused by two reasons: 1. The load current is too large; 2. The heat dissipation treatment is not done well, and the power supply Engineers need to make corresponding improvements in the design from the design source, and even need to re-select the power chip. Generally speaking, there are two ways to reduce the heat generation of the power chip: "open source" and "throttling".
Increase the heat sink to reduce the heat of the power chip -- "open source"
If the current consumption is within the specification range of the power chip, but the heat is still serious, it means that the heat dissipation is not good. There are basically two ways to dissipate the heat of the power chip: 1. Use in-line packaging and add heat sinks; 2. Use patch Packaging, increasing the heat dissipation copper skin, and applications with relatively high power generally require a heat sink to be installed on the power chip.
Increase the heat dissipation area on the PCB -- "open source"
When designing PCB wiring, the wiring of the power supply part is generally designed to be thicker. At this time, we need to increase the copper foil for heat dissipation as much as possible for the heating element, and add heat dissipation holes on the PCB when necessary.
Reduce load current and reduce power chip heating -- "throttling"
Among the output parameters of the power chip, two parameters are very critical: 1. Output voltage; 2. Output current. When we design electronic products, we must fully consider and leave a certain margin for the power chip to prevent serious heat generation. If the load current evaluation is small, when the board is running, the power chip is almost fully loaded and the output will cause serious heat. Generally speaking, the output current of the power chip is at most 1A, and it is best not to exceed 800mA when using it, and it is best to control it within 500mA.
The power supply part is the key part of the board. Through "open source" and "throttling", the heat generation of the power supply chip can be effectively reduced. The chargers/adapters all use high-efficiency power supply chips, and heat will also occur during the charging process. Within its rated power output range, it is normal.
