Recently, IC insights, a semiconductor research institute, announced the sales ranking of the top ten analog IC manufacturers in the world: Texas Instruments, ADI, and Skyworks ranked the top three, followed by Infineon, STMicroelectronics, Qorvo, NXP, ON Semiconductor, Microchip, Renesas.
It should be noted that IC Insights‘ statistics include general-purpose analog components, mixed-signal analog, and specialized analog circuits with at least 50% analog circuits.
In general, thanks to the global core shortage that broke out in the fourth quarter of 2020 and the continuous rise in chip prices, the global analog IC market sales in 2021 will reach US$73.914 billion, a substantial increase of 30% year-on-year. The top ten analog IC manufacturers have a combined sales of about 50.4 billion US dollars, accounting for 68.2% of the entire analog market. Among them, the largest year-on-year increase in sales was Skyworks, which reached 49%. Although STMicroelectronics has the slowest growth rate among the top ten manufacturers, it also has a year-on-year growth of 20%.
If you look at the location of the headquarters, among the top ten analog IC manufacturers in 2021, 6 are headquartered in the United States, 3 are headquartered in Europe, and 1 is in Japan.
Specifically, No. 1 Texas Instruments‘ 2021 analog IC sales will increase by 29% year-on-year to $14.05 billion, accounting for 86% of its total IC sales ($16.3 billion) and its total semiconductor revenue ($17.3 billion). U.S. dollar) 81% of the total analog IC market share of 19%.
In second place was Analog Devices, whose 2021 analog IC sales rose 21% year over year to $9.4 billion, with a 12.7% market share. It should be noted that ADI completed its $28 billion acquisition of Maxim Integrated in August 2021. ADI said that its analog IC business, including through its acquisitions of Maxim in 2021 and Linear in 2017, captures “from sensors to cloud, DC to 100 GHz and beyond, and from nanowatts to kilowatts.” ADI 2021 Analog IC end-use applications are industrial (50%), automotive (21%), communications (15%) and consumer (14%).
Skyworks ranked third with $5.9 billion in analog IC sales, with revenue up 49% year-on-year, the largest year-over-year increase among the top ten analog IC manufacturers, with a market share of 8%. Skyworks specializes in RF front-end modules and power amplifiers for mobile phones, highly integrated SiPs and SoCs for wireless infrastructure, power management chips, precision analog components, WiFi chips and connectivity modules, and smart energy ICs for ZigBee and Bluetooth applications . Skyworks‘ biggest customer in 2021 is Apple, accounting for 59% of its sales.
In July 2021, Skyworks acquired Silicon Laboratories Inc‘s infrastructure and automotive businesses for $2.75 billion to accelerate its investments in electric and hybrid vehicles, industrial and motor control, 5G wireless infrastructure, optical data communications, data centers and other Expansion of application areas.
Another major RF chip maker, Qrovo, ranked sixth, with its analog IC sales revenue of $3.875 billion in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 22% and a market share of 5.2%. Qrovo‘s main products include power amplifiers, RF filters, multiplexers and other components.
The top three analog IC suppliers in Europe, Infineon, STMicroelectronics and NXP, ranked fourth, fifth and seventh respectively, with a combined 16% of the global market share.
Among them, Infineon‘s analog IC sales were 4.8 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 26%. In terms of application areas, Infineon is continuing to expand its business in the automotive sector, which accounts for 44% of its total sales in 2021, compared to 41% in 2020. Other major end-use application areas include power/sensor systems (29%), industrial power control (14%), and connected security (13%).
ST‘s 2021 analog IC sales will be $3.906 billion, up 20% year-on-year, with a market share of 5.3%. According to the financial report data, STMicroelectronics’ revenue in 2021 will be US$12.761 billion, of which analog ICs account for about 30%. ST‘s business is broad and fragmented, with more than 100,000 customers, the largest being iPhone maker Apple and electric vehicle leader Tesla.
NXP‘s 2021 analog IC sales will be $3.457 billion, a year-on-year increase of 40%, with a market share of 4.7%. As the world‘s major automotive chip manufacturer, NXP‘s automotive chip business revenue in 2021 will reach US$5.493 billion, a year-on-year increase of 44%, accounting for nearly 50% of its total revenue.
ON Semiconductor ranked eighth, with 2021 analog IC sales of $2.115 billion, up 32% year-on-year, and a market share of 2.9%. At present, ON Semiconductor‘s products include CMOS chips, camera sensors, radar technology, IGBTs, etc., mainly for the fields of automobile, industry, communication, consumer electronics and computers. According to the financial report, Anson‘s revenue in 2021 will be US$6.74 billion, a year-on-year increase of 28.3%, of which the analog IC business revenue will account for about one-third.
Microchip ranked ninth with 2021 analog IC sales of $1.839 billion, up 21% year-over-year, and a market share of 2.5%. Microchip‘s product portfolio includes MCUs, FPGAs, mixed-signal, power management, MOSFETs, radio frequency (RF), EEPROM/EERAM/SRAM and more. According to the financial report, Microchip’s revenue in fiscal year 2021 was US$6.821 billion, a year-on-year increase of 25.4%.
Renesas ranked 10th, with 2021 analog IC sales of $1.110 billion, up 25% year-on-year, and a market share of 1.5%. Last year, Renesas Electronics lost some production capacity due to the earthquake in Japan and the fire at the Naka 12-inch factory, which also dragged down its revenue growth to a certain extent. However, the strong demand for automotive chips in the automotive market has also driven the rapid growth of Renesas Electronics‘ automotive business. According to Renesas Electronics‘ annual report, its revenue in 2021 is 994.4 billion yen (about 7.5 billion US dollars), a year-on-year increase of 38.9%; its operating profit is 183.601 billion yen, a year-on-year increase of 940.1%, of which the automotive business revenue is 462.3 billion yen. (approximately RMB 3.5 billion), a year-on-year increase of 35.6%.
According to IC Insights, analog ICs remain a critical component in nearly all digital-centric systems. The analog IC market typically grows (or declines) at a more moderate rate than the overall IC market, but that will not be the case in 2021. The analog market grew 30% last year, while the overall IC market grew only 26%. In 2021, each general-purpose and special-purpose analog IC segment posted double-digit sales growth. Only signal-conversion IC revenue grew 13% last year, but all other analog IC categories grew at least 27%.
