ON Semiconductor‘s NCL31000 is a smart LED driver that combines a buck converter operating over a wide input voltage range, functionality and comprehensive circuit protection.

Thanks to its 50 kHz modulation bandwidth, the NCL31000 is also capable of performing visible light communication. The LED driver complies with the specifications of the YellowDot Indoor Positioning Capability Certification Program.

The NCL31000 drives LEDs using a high-efficiency buck converter that supports high-bandwidth analog and PWM dimming to zero current. It regulates the output current to ±0.1% accuracy.

Two auxiliary DC-DC converters can be used to power microcontrollers and sensors. The NCL31001 is a version of the NCL31000 without the two auxiliary converters. The NCL31001 is designed for use with the NCL31000 in a dual channel LED driver.

Its functions are used to measure input and output current and voltage, LED temperature, and DC-DC converter voltage and current. Power metering is accurate to ±1%.

A fast security mechanism protects the critical modules of the chip. They include overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent protection for LEDs, overcurrent protection for chips, and overtemperature protection for chips and LEDs.
