An integrated circuit is a tiny electronic device or component. Using a certain process, components and wirings such as transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors and inductors required in a circuit are connected to each other, fabricated on a small or several small semiconductor wafers or dielectric substrates, and then packaged in a tube. Inside the shell, it becomes a miniature structure with the required circuit functions; all the components are structurally integrated into a whole, which makes the electronic components take a big step towards miniaturization, low power consumption and high reliability. It is represented by the letters "IC" in the circuit. Integrated circuits are now called IC chips in the industry.
So what types of IC chips are there? IC chips can be divided into many types, according to different ways, there are different types. They are as follows:
1. Classification by production process
According to the manufacturing process, integrated circuits can be divided into semiconductor integrated circuits and film integrated circuits.
Film integrated circuits can be further divided into thick film integrated circuits and thin film integrated circuits.
2. Classification by conductivity type
Integrated circuits can be divided into bipolar integrated circuits and unipolar integrated circuits according to their conductivity types.
The fabrication process of bipolar integrated circuits is complex and the power consumption is relatively large, which are represented by STTL, TTL, ECL, HTL, LST-TL and so on. The fabrication process of unipolar integrated circuits is simple, the power consumption is also low, and it is easy to be made into large-scale integrated circuits, which are represented by NMOS, CMOS, PMOS and so on.
3. Classification by functional structure
Integrated circuits can be divided into two categories: analog integrated circuits and digital integrated circuits according to their different structures and functions.
Analog integrated circuits are used to generate, amplify and process various analog signals (referring to signals whose amplitude varies with the time frontier. Basic analog integrated circuits include operational amplifiers, multipliers, integrated voltage regulators, timers, signal generators, etc.
There are many varieties of digital integrated circuits. Small-scale integrated circuits have various gate circuits, namely NAND gates, OR gates, etc.; medium-scale integrated circuits have data selectors, codecs, flip-flops, counters, registers, etc. Large-scale or very large-scale integrated circuits are PLD (Programmable Logic Device) and ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit).
Fourth, according to the level of integration classification
Integrated circuits are divided into small-scale integrated circuits (SSI), medium-scale integrated circuits (MSI), large-scale integrated circuits (LSI), very large-scale integrated circuits (VLSI), and ultra-large-scale integrated circuits (ULSI).
